We held public Meetings in southeastern ohio about property rights in communities surrounded by pipelines.

The Problem

Communities surrounded by pipelines are experiencing significant property damage yet no one is teaching them their property rights.

The solution

We went to some of these communities and held public meetings with our attorneys to talk to them about their property rights.

Ohio, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania already have a complicated and growing web of pipelines.  While pipelines are the safest option for transporting natural gas and natural gas liquids, landowners still are experiencing problems during and after pipeline construction.  These problems include:

The Idea

We would hold two meetings in two counties where current pipeline construction was happening. We chose Harrison and Jefferson County where a pipeline (the Falcon Pipeline which will carry ethane to the Shell ethane cracker plant in Monaca, PA) is currently under construction.

Our meetings were designed to engage participants. We spent 25 minutes introducing ourselves and our general information. Then we spent the rest of the time answering questions. Some of these questions we had prepared for like “Who do I call?” and “What do I do if..?” and created handouts with those answers. Those handouts are available above in the materials section. The important questions, however, would be the ones that remained unknown. You can see our log of some questions and answers from the meetings.

We used a variety of methods of direct marketing to advertise the meetings. We sent mailers with carefully chosen language to people living along Falcon. We also targeted that location and landowner groups on social media. We sent letters to the editor and posted signs. Our goal was to reach anyone experiencing issues currently who would come to discuss them with us.

Loss or contamination of water

In recent years, we have seen a number of individuals who are experiencing impacts to their private drinking water supplies. It’s happening for a variety of different reasons, but all of reasons are relating to the construction and/or operation of pipelines. The example in this video was caused by irresponsible construction, something that could have easily been avoided. But there have been many other examples as well.

Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) can also cause water contamination when drilling mud infiltrates private water welIs. Below is a visual example of an HDD. You can learn more about HDDs here.
